Understanding Market Prices

Factors Affecting Commodity Prices

Mandi prices fluctuate daily based on several key factors. Understanding these can help you time your sales better.

  • Supply & Demand: High arrival volumes usually lower prices. Peak harvest season often sees the lowest prices.
  • Quality: Moisture content, foreign matter, and grain size significantly impact the final rate.
  • Global Trends: Export bans or import duty changes can cause sudden price movements in crops like Onion and Wheat.

What is MSP? (Minimum Support Price)

MSP is the guaranteed price at which the government purchases crops from farmers. It acts as a safety net. Even if market prices fall drastically, the government agencies will buy your crop at this fixed rate. MSP is usually announced at the beginning of the sowing season for 23 crops including Cereal, Pulses, and Oilseeds.

Tips for Better Selling

  • Clean and grade your produce before taking it to the Mandi.
  • Check prices in multiple nearby mandis using AgriWise before transporting.
  • If you have storage, consider holding non-perishable crops (like grains) for 2-3 months after harvest when prices typically recover.
